Let’s get cheesy this summer
Irish farmhouse cheeses are as varied and interesting as the country itself and Cork boasts so many great versions.
Bord Bia has launched its summer campaign encouraging people to try the delightful tastes and diverse range of Irish farmhouse cheeses. The campaign highlights the exceptional quality and versatility of these cheeses.
Irish farmhouse cheeses embody the stories of their makers, representing distinct regions and capturing the essence of Ireland's landscapes. Crafted with care and high-quality milk from cow, goat, sheep, and buffalo, each cheese reflects its origins with authenticity and passion.
With a variety of styles to choose from, including hard, soft, bloomy rind, washed rind, and blue, there is something to please every palate.
“Our summer campaign is an invitation to explore the remarkable world of Irish farmhouse cheese,” said Liam McCabe, Sector Manager for Dairy Specialist Sectors at Bord Bia. “These cheeses are a testament to the dedication of the cheesemakers and the distinctive character of the farms where they are produced. Each cheese is a true reflection of the rich heritage and quality craftsmanship of Irish farmhouse cheese production.”
Bó Rua Farm, located in Ballyknock, Ballynoe, Fermoy, is a notable multi-award-winning Cork farmhouse cheese producer. Owned by Tom and Norma Dinneen, who take care of their cows, handcraft their cheese, and prepare it for distribution to their loyal customers.
Their dedication to providing the ideal environment for their cows results in rich, nutritious and delicious milk, perfect for cheesemaking. At the recent Artisan Cheese Awards in May, Bó Rua Farm’s Farmhouse Cheese earned a gold medal, while their new Roasted Onion and Chive flavoured cheese was awarded a silver medal.
Durrus Cheese, produced by Jeffa Gill and her daughter Sarah Hennessy in Coomkeen, Durrus,
West Cork, is another prime example of a Cork farmhouse cheese. Since 1979, Jeffa has been making cheese on her farm, creating unique handcrafted cheeses that reflect the beauty of the area.
Durrus cheeses are still made by hand using traditional techniques on their farm in Coomkeen.
In 2020, Jeffa received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Food Writers Guild for her contribution to Irish food.
Cork producers also include: Ardsallagh Goats Cheese, Bluebells Farm, Ballinrostig Homestead, Carrigaline, Clonmore Cheese, Coolea, Gubbeen Farmhouse Products, Hegarty Cheese, Toonsbridge Dairy, Milleens Cheese, McCarthy’s Natural Dairy and Macroom Buffalo Cheese.
