Irish mythology uncensored

A troop of storytellers and musicians will descend upon Leeside this weekend to share some uncensored Irish myths.

Candlelit Tales, whose members are originally from Cork, specialise in telling live Irish myths and tales as they should be told – full of sex, violence, wisdom, and cultural richness, all to a backing of live, original music.

The group will be performing at Gaia on 98th Street, just off Bandon Road, in Cork city this Saturday from 8pm.

Driven by a passion for Irish mythology and melody, Candlelit Tales have been refining their uniquely expressive, naturalistic, and modern style of storytelling since 2014.

In line with the oral traditions of Ireland, the skilled storytellers of Candlelit Tales leaven their tales with humour, passion, and playfulness to enchant audiences of all ages.

Taking inspiration from the Celtic calendar, performances are tailored to suit the time of year, the location or event, and can even weave in some local landmarks and mythic lore.

Live performances are recorded for the Candlelit Tales Podcast which has over 750,000 plays worldwide since 2019.

The members also put on workshops where they use Irish myth and storytelling skills as the source material to explore deeper meanings and encourage creative thinking and understanding. The workshops are for groups who want to delve deeper into the ancient wisdom of Irish takes.

One workshop explores the principals of the Brehon Law, Ireland’s early legal code said to have been codified by the legendary King Cormac Mac Airt. The system was based on ideas of restorative justice, community, rank, and clan, at a time when the island of Ireland functioned without prisons or police. In the workshop, guests are invited to take part in a live co-created story to explore Brehon Law and how it compare and contrast with the principles of our current legal code.

The group is available for booking and can create a show to suit any occasion. For more information and to book tickets for Candlelit Tales’ performance at Gaia this Saturday evening, visit candlelittales.ie/performances.
