Walk the Camino for homelessness
A homeless charity is calling on the people of Cork to raise funds by taking part in a life-changing pilgrimage in northern Spain.
Focus Ireland’s Camino de Santiago challenge takes place from 24 September to 1 October and will cover a distance of 103 kilometres, starting in Vigo and finishing in Santiago De Compostela.
All funds raised will help Irish families to access the services they need to help them stay in their homes or help them back into their own home again.
Focus Ireland Cork services include tenancy support and sustainment, advice and information service, and long-term supported accommodation.
Monica McElhinney, Focus community fundraiser, said: "This remarkable journey not only provides participants with an opportunity to experience the awe-inspiring Camino trail but also allows them to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals facing homelessness in Cork and the southwest.”
She added: “By taking part in this challenge, you are helping us provide vital support services, create real change, and bring hope to those who need it most.”
During 2022, Focus Ireland Cork helped 599 households who were homeless or at risk of losing their home. Focus Ireland also supported 323 households in Cork to move out of homelessness with the support of the state and local authorities.
To take part in Focus Ireland’s Camino de Santiago challenge, participants must raise a minimum of €2,250. To register for the challenge and receive a registration form, log onto focusireland.ie/event-and-challenges/camino-walk.
