The dos and don’ts of curly hair

Grace Sweeney

Having curly hair gets you a lot of compliments and us curly haired girls often hear the phrase 'I wish I had your hair'.

However most people are unaware of the work that comes with having curly hair and the daily problems that we face such as frizz and knots.

To help fight these curly hair problems, a curly girl should follow these dos and don’ts!

Do use a leave in conditioner. The Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Cream works wonders against frizz and cost €8.95 at lookfantastic.ie.

Don’t use a hairbrush and instead detangle your curls gently using your fingers. A hairbrush will leave you with big poofy hair and should only be used when your hair is wet.

Do use a good shampoo and conditioner.

You don’t need to spend a fortune if you don’t want to, just as long they have no parabens or sulphates. The Kerastase Very Curly Hair Duo Bundle will keep your hair healthy and frizz-free and is available for €65.45 at lookfantastic.ie.

Don’t wrap your hair in a rough towel when you get out of the shower. Avoid making a frizzy mess by opting for a microfibre towel or an old t-shirt.

Do go to a hairdresser who works specially with curly hair as they know that curly hair is unique and requires special care and won’t give you crazy layers.

Don’t use heat on your hair. This can be a hard one but if you want damage-free curls, then ideally you should only use heat 4 to 8 times a year.

Do dry your hair using a diffuser. This will prevent frizz and give you lots of volume.

Don’t forget hair oil. It will prevent your hair from getting frizzy in humid and wet environments which is essential in the Irish weather. A great one is the Moroccan Oil treatment and can be purchased for €66.81 at caretobeauty.com.

Lastly, do use a silk pillowcase to protect your curls as you sleep and to avoid waking up with a knotty mess!
