Everyman’s panto embraces inclusivity
The Everyman’s Panto, Beauty and the Beast, which runs until Sunday 14 January has been described as its most inclusive yet. On Friday 5 January, it will include an audio-described performance and a pre-show touch tour will also be available.
An ISL-interpreted performance will take place on Saturday 6 January, where an interpreter will use sign language to communicate what is spoken on stage.
There will also be a relaxed performance on Sunday 14 January. At this show, you can make noise, come and go from the auditorium or take a break in a designated chill-out area in the foyer. Certain elements of the lighting and sound will also be adapted for this production.
CEO and Executive Director at The Everyman, Sean Kelly said: “We always say that The Everyman is for everyone and we take this statement very seriously. This year we’re presenting our most accessible panto ever. For the first time in a single run, audiences can avail of a relaxed performance, ISL-interpreted performance, and an audio-described performance with touch tour.”
Situated on MacCurtain street, the Everyman Palace Theatre owes its existence “to community initiative, and its mission is to give back to all its communities and the citizens of Cork with accessible pathways to experience live entertainment”.
All donations to The Everyman this pantomime season will go towards supporting more accessible programming in 2024. The venue is asking audiences to give everyone the chance to enjoy The Everyman with funds raised supporting more ISL interpreted theatre, touch tours, relaxed performances, audio described performances and accessible backstage tours in the new year.
The Everyman’s Education and Community Manager, Maev O’Shea said: “We believe that the experience of participating in cultural life should and could be for everyone. As signatories of the The Arts for all Charter in 2022, The Everyman made a public commitment to diversity and inclusion. We promised to build our inclusion and diversity strategy. With our accessible panto performances, we are working towards delivering on that promise. We’re opening our doors and making our venue accessible in new ways. We’re also celebrating our diverse creative community and audience – The Everyman is for Everyone. Oh yes, it is!”
