Cork man Cillian dedicates Oscar to peace makers
“Proud Irish man” Cillian Murphy has become the first Cork actor to win an Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’.
The biographical film, which also starred the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, and Matt Damon, bagged seven academy awards in total at last Sunday’s ceremony. Taking to the stage to accept his Oscar, Murphy said he was “a little overwhelmed” to be receiving the award.
“Every single crew member, every single cast member on ‘Oppenheimer’, you guys carried me through,” he said.
“I’m a very proud Irish man standing here tonight. We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb and for better or for worse we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world, so I’d really like to dedicate this to peace makers everywhere. Go raibh míle maith agat.”
‘Oppenheimer’ also won Oscars for best picture; best director - Chrisopher Nolan; best supporting actor - Robert Downey Jr; best cinematography - Hoyte van Hoytema; best editing –-Jennifer Lame; and best original score - Ludwig Göransson.
According to Forbes, the film has made close to a billion dollars in the box office.
