Jack’s positive energy is infectious

Jack Barry, a Kilbrittain native, has found as much joy in his new career at Specsavers in Bandon as he brings to his colleagues there.
This opportunity for Jack was created through Field of Dreams, a branch created by Down Syndrome Cork in 2017. It provides meaningful work and life skills development opportunities for adults with Down Syndrome.
Located in Curraheen, Field of Dreams is a social and holistic training environment. It focuses on providing adults with Down Syndrome opportunities for ongoing learning and growth through a variety of bespoke programmes. Ready2Work is a Field of Dreams programme connected to Down Syndrome Ireland’s Employment Programme. It focuses on preparing students for work and helping them find and retain paid employment.
People with Down Syndrome often benefit greatly from meaningful employment. It boosts confidence levels, increases social connectivity, promotes independence and creates a stronger sense of community around a person.
Margaret Greaney, Employment Support Specialist at Field of Dreams, said: “Specsavers have been phenomenal to work with and in Cork have provided meaningful part time employment for four our Ready2Work graduates. We would encourage every business across Ireland to get involved with Down Syndrome Ireland’s National Employment Programme and experience the positive shift in the workforce as a result.
“It is wonderful to see how happy Jack is in his job and how his confidence has grown as he has settled into his role. It is also lovely to see the joy that he brings to his colleagues in Specsavers.”
Companies such as Specsavers that participate in the programme are provided with inclusive workplace training, which includes education and awareness of working with a person with Down Syndrome with the aim of promoting diversity within the workplace. Specsavers stores across Ireland have been involved with the National Employment Programme since 2022.
Marie Burke, the Retail Director at Specsavers Bandon, said: “We are delighted to have Jack on our team. His positive energy is infectious, and he is an invaluable member of the team.”
