Foul play ruled out in Lough body discovery

Gardaí continue to investigate the discovery of a woman’s body in Cork city on Tuesday, with foul play having been ruled out.

Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a woman’s body near the Lough area of Cork city on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman’s remains are reported to have been discovered by workers carrying out pest control on the premises. It is understood that the woman’s body may have remained undiscovered for over a year. Pictures taken of the house in the Brookfield Lawn area of Cork city’s southside show a heavily overgrown garden.

Though gardaí are yet to identify the woman, she is believed to have been in her late fifties and known to the community.

Gardaí confirmed that a post-mortem will take place in the coming days, which will determine the course of the investigation. Gardaí also confirmed that the local coroner has been notified.

The tragic news follows last year’s discovery of a man’s body in a boarded-up house in Mallow. Following an inquest, it was found that the man had passed away in 2001 and his remains had remained unfound for over two decades. The deceased man was named as Tim O'Sullivan and the inquest into the circumstances of his death prompted calls for a review of protocols regarding derelict sites to prevent such tragedies occurring in the future.
