Hello summer style

Dare I say it, but I think summer may have arrived.

Well, it certainly did at the weekend when I on a whim rented a bike and went for a massively long cycle of course forgetting my sunscreen and, in the process, managing to burn my nose and my shoulders. There is no better way to feel completely foolish than to get sunburnt and I won’t be letting that happen again as I’ll have my factor 50 stored in my bag for those impromptu adventurous moments.

Summer is great and wonderful, but we can’t forget there are some amongst us who do not vibe with summer fashion and it’s easy to see why. There’s more skin on show and our wardrobes are naturally more full of autumn winter style.

With a spate of less than sunny summers we have also gotten out of the practice of styling our summer wardrobe however there are some looks that can carry you through summer which take very little effort and have a laidback, chic Scandi aesthetic.

I’m having a little bit of a moment with stripes this summer and one piece that have been wearing loads is a blue and white striped oversized shirt. I’ve styled it for nighttime with a pair of navy skorts (shorts/skirt hybrid) and silver heels for nights and then for day I’ve styled it with wide leg trousers and tan flat sandals. The shirt of course is such a classic when worn with denim but I love making the switch to wide leg white trousers for summer.

Another striped item I am living in at the moment is a pair of light blue and white drawstring waist trousers. Yes they could be mistaken for pyjama pants but they are so comfortable and look great just worn with a simple ribbed vest and sliders. Pop a light night over your shoulders for the chillier evenings and you’ve got a simple, easy to wear summer look.

If you really want to pair everything back, I think you could spend the whole summer in a vest top and denim shorts and still be able to style the look in a multitude of ways.

I just adore a pair of denim shorts and I’m sure everyone by now must have a pair in their wardrobe whether that be in a shorter denim cutoff style or a longer almost knee length culotte style.

I personally like to wear denim cutoffs and they are the perfect partner for a white, black or striped ribbed vest and just add your favourite pair of summer sandals and simple jewellery for a fresh look. The look can also be jazzed up with an oversized blazer and heels for nighttime.

I’ve worn longer style denim shorts a little bit less, but they can look quite sleek with the right accessories. Your most stylish pair of sunnies will really elevate the look.

Special mention must also go to the slip skirt as a great piece to wear in the summer but that can also be worn all year round. I am particularly partial to a leopard print slip skirt styled with a linen waistcoat, leather sandals and a straw bag but I am of course a sucker for anything leopards.

I have also seen people going full on neutral and wearing a black slip skirt with a black cami and this is a great outfit to wear with heels and some statement jewellery for a summer night out.

Keep calm and embrace the sunny weather.
