Cobh Animation Team paid a recent visit to Curam Care Home Carrigaline.

A step back in time at Carrigaline care home

The weather didn’t dampen spirts for the recent visit of Carrigaline Vintage Car Club and Cobh Animation Team to Curam Care Home Carrigaline.

There was a diverse collection of classic cars on show, each meticulously maintained and restored to its former glory. Residents were able to enjoy the craftsmanship and history behind each vehicle on display.

This visit was arranged with thanks to Kevin Meaney who also entertained with a few songs.

The atmosphere was further enhanced by a visit from Cobh Animation Team, a group of re-enactors who bring the past to life with style.

They spoke to residents about their different costumes and shared the stories behind them.

This visit was just one of the many activities that take place at Curam Care Home Carrigaline, and every day brings something to entertain and engage.

Teresa O’Donovan is the Activities Coordinator, and it’s her role to organise a range of group activities based on each resident’s individual needs and preferences.

It’s a job that takes dedication and a lot of hard work, and Teresa explained why she loves to do what she does.

“There is an assessment tool in senior care called a ‘Key to me’. This is the part of my job I love because it allows me to have access into the very private world and memories of people who have chosen to live here in Curam Care Home Carrigaline. Memories are the cornerstone of who we are, of our identity, and its vital to our happiness that we receive the correct assistance in helping us to recall them, that’s where I come in!

“I feel very privileged that people share details of their lives with me, the happy and the sad. Nostalgia can increase our happiness and keep us socially connected. Residents tell me about their first kiss, first job, first car and sometimes they are surprised when I tell them that the ‘firsts’ are not over! Just because you’re a certain age or living in an assisted living environment doesn’t mean that you have stopped making new memories,” she said.

“In fact I strongly believe that we must seek out ways to achieve new experiences. At the moment I have a lady who is planning on flying a small plane in the near future.

“The role of activity coordinator is a rollercoaster, each day brings its challenges and it’s a journey of care that we take with each resident as individuals. I have learned a lot about people and about life in this role, but I really love what I do, it’s like stepping into the wardrobe to Narnia on a daily basis.”
