Oasis to keep the dream alive
Leeside Oasis fans might look back in anger if they fail to secure tickets for the band’s long awaited reunion tour which go on presale in Ireland tomorrow, Friday.
The famous feuding Gallagher brothers seem to have made amends, for now, announcing a string of concerts across Ireland and the UK next summer. The tour will include two dates at Dublin's Croke Park on 16 and 17 August.
The shows will mark the group’s first return to Ireland since their sold-out headlining concert in Slaine Castle in 2009 where they played to 80,000 people.
The last time they played Cork was at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 1996 where they were supported by The Prodigy.
Recalling the famous Leeside concert, Claire Coffey from Greenmount in Cork city, said it’s a memory that she treasures to this day.
“It was just a few days after the legendary Knebworth concerts,” she told the Cork Independent.
“We arrived early and were allowed into the pit area nearest the stage. This is how it worked in 1996!
“We had seen them on TV and on the cover of Smash Hits so many times that it was hard to believe that they were here in Cork and only a few feet away from us.
“The songs sounded just as good as they did on the radio or on our tapes and everyone was so happy to be there.
“I remember seeing them on stage and thinking, ‘wow, it's really them!’. After the concert, I bought a special Oasis Páirc Uí Chaoimh programme, which I still have and treasure.”
Ms Coffey said she had always dreamed of a reunion after the band parted ways in 2009 after years of infighting between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.
“I'd always hoped and dreamed that they would get back together but things weren't looking good for a long time - and then it finally happened. It still feels surreal. Croke Park 2025 is going to be almost 30 years after their Cork concert. I just hope that I can get tickets and relive the magic of those great days,” said Ms Coffey.
The Oasis comeback tour will see them play the Cardiff Principality Stadium on 4 and 5 July; Manchester Heaton Park on 11, 12, 19, and 20 July; London Wembley Stadium on 25 and 26 July, followed by shows on 2 and 3 August; Edinburgh Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium on 8 and 9 August; and finally, Dublin Croke Park on 16 and 17 August.
