Davy Fitzgerald and Cork East Athletic Sporting Committee will host the event in Aghada GAA Club.

Superstars are on the way to help fundraise

Fundraising to deliver an inclusive regional athletics track and field facility for the East Cork area will begin next month with a superstar event.

The Cork East Superstars event will take place on Saturday 7 September at 10am in Aghada GAA Club, Rostellan, and will feature a nine-piece obstacle course, where competitors can test their mettle against a number of different challenges.

The event will be overseen by well-known hurling pundit and former All-Ireland winning bainisteoir Davy Fitzgerald, who is the creator of ‘Irelands Fittest Family’ TV show on RTÉ.

This event is first in a series of fundraising efforts by the Cork East Athletic Sporting Committee (CEASC) who are a voluntary group committed to providing safe, inclusive and wheelchair accessible spaces, that are highly accessible, all year round and essential to communities living in East Cork, including schools, sports clubs and the general public. Speaking ahead of the event, Public Relations Officer at CEASC Maeve Hurley said: “We are delighted to announce EirGrid as our main sponsor for the Superstars event, providing invaluable support and outreach to enhance the fun experience of the event which is not only a great community day out, but also one that raises vital awareness for a very worthy and necessary facility for the region.”

Entry for the event is still open for teams of four with a mixed gender ratio, all participants must be over 16 years of age. There is no need for a family connection but at least one member of each team is required to be actively involved with a local club, sporting or non-sporting.

Aghada’s main pitch is the perfect setting for spectators to cheer on the teams with great views of the obstacles from an elevated position alongside the pitch. CEASC will also be running a series of races for younger athletes.

An array of local food vendors will also be onsite and Aghada GAA will also have their tuck shop open.

There are great cash prizes for the top three teams, along with the chance to be entered into a raffle to win a family hotel stay for any adult who pays admission on the day.

CEASC are holding a series of raffles on their iDonate page with prizes from Ireland’s sporting hero, Sonia O’Sullivan, as well as tickets for a Munster v Ospreys’ rugby match.

CEASC said Sonia has been a “huge supporter of CEASC from the very beginning and we are proud to have her backing on our vision”.
