Conference to hear how radiolgy can help women

An upcoming health event on Leeside will hear how radiology can benefit women’s health.

Radiology nurses in CUH are hosting the conference on Saturday which will be opened by Tanaiste Micheál Martin and the agenda will include talks on new radiology services and products that are used within the HSE.

Those organising the event said: “Radiology is expanding and the treatments and services that it provides for patients are only getting better. Radiology covers a huge range of services from stroke care to coiling uterine fibroids.”

Those in attendance at the event will hear about CUH’s very large radiology department, which incorporates numerous services for women’s health. These include uterine fibroid embolisation. Fibroids are benign overgrowths of the uterus which can cause painful smymptoms. Attendees will learn that uterine fibroid emolisation is a minimally invasive procedure that temporarily stops blood flow to the uterine fibroids and can shrink the fibroid.

Organisers of the event said: “In the past a woman would have to undergo a hysterectomy but with advances in the medical field and within the radiology department, female patients can avail of a less invasive procedure. 80% of women report a significant improvement in their quality of life. This procedure can reduce the patients time in hospital and less risks than surgery.

“Women experience unique health issues and conditions that require special image tests designed especially for them. Radiology provides these services. From helping women catch diseases before they develop to monitoring pregnancy, from specific gynaecological biopsies to mammograms. Radiology is the way of the future with advanced technology and expert professionals working together,” the organisers said ahead of the conference.

Aswell as benefitting women’s health, the conference will also explore oncology requests in radiology, AI and how interventional radiology is the future. The event will take place on Saturday 5 October from 9am-4.30pm in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on College Road, Cork city.
