New veteran home to open in Cork city
A charity which helps Irish veterans plans to open a new home in Cork city next year, it was recently announced.
ONE (Óglaigh Náisiúnta Na hÉireann, the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel) said it plans to provide five new veteran homes across the country and increase veteran support officers (VSOs) from five to seven by 2026 alongside the establishment of a permanent 24/7 Mental Health Support Helpline.
The five new homes include one in Cork city called Brú Uí Choileáin. This is a new home with 6 bedrooms, developed in partnership with Cork City Council and the Office of Public Works, and is set to open in 2025. The others are planned for Limerick city, Newbridge, Galway and Louth.
The announcement coincides with the launch of ONE’s 2024 Fuchsia Appeal, an annual event to help fund support services for Irish veterans, and to remember those who have served in all branches of the Defence Forces, both at home and abroad.
Founded in March 1951, ONE’s primary objective is to support Irish veterans in need by providing accommodation and essential support services for those experiencing mental health issues and other challenges.
Speaking at the launch of ONE’s 2024 Fuchsia Appeal, Defence Forces veteran and CEO of ONE, Cormac Kirwan, said these “announcements reflect our ongoing mission to provide a safety net for those who have served Ireland, ensuring they have the support they need to rebuild their lives. The expansion of our housing and mental health services is critical to meeting the growing demands placed on our organisation and ensure that no Irish veteran is left behind.”
To date, ONE has helped more than 1,000 veterans out of homelessness. The charity operates four residential homes in Athlone, Cobh, Dublin and Letterkenny, which provide board and lodging for 51 homeless veterans. Donations to the 2024 Fuchsia Appeal can be at one-veterans.org.
