One of Cork city’s most iconic and beloved chippers, Jackie Lennox’s, has closed its doors forever, prompting an online debate as to who now does the best chips on Leeside.

Where the comforting and unmistakable smell of Lennox’s chips once hung in the air on Bandon Road, now hangs a sense of loss after the business sold its last bag of chips on Sunday, bringing an end to 73 years of delicious and fairly priced history.

In the wake of the closure, many have taken to Cork’s dedicated Reddit page to hash out which chipper does the best chips in Cork now that Lennox’s is gone.

The Redditor behind the initial post, AlcoholicPainter100, asked: “What’s the best chipper in Cork now?”

“For me it has always been Golden Fry,” they added.

The Golden Fry in Ballinlough came up many times in the thread, with one person commenting: “I worked there for a year and put on 3 stone cos the food was just too good to say no to.”

Another added: “Golden Fry has always been the best.”

“Golden Fry in city and Chunky Chip in Clon for the county winner,” said LornaBobbitt.

One of the saltier comments read: “As someone who's only lived in Cork for a year; Lennox's was NEVER the best. Bang average! You're all nostalgia merchants!”

Looking beyond the city limits, Redditor Dadoftwostars wrote: “Outside the city, we had Rosscarbery Fish and Chips yesterday and honestly the amazing google reviews were so accurate. Probably some of the best takeaway I have been to.”

“I really like Catch of the Day in Kinsale. They have very, very tasty scampi and chips – they melt in your mouth,” wrote Conscious-Mud-9028.

FlagyI400 commented: “Probably disqualified for not being in the city, but I think Sorrento in Cobh should at least get an honourable mention.”

KC’s in Douglas, Barties in Ballyphehane, and Eco Fish on MacCurtain Street also got numerous mentions.
