City Hall gigs pay tribute to former rock greats
By Finnian Cox
There’s a place for almost every type of gig at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival for many years now and the City Hall will showcase tributes to three of the greatest rock bands of all time over the weekend.
Running from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 October, Even Better Than the Real Thing will feature tribute acts to Oasis, Quenn and Fleetwood Mac.
Kicking off the series of gigs on Friday amidst a Champagne Supernova will be Mad Ferrit, who are described as ‘Ireland’s definitive Oasis tribute group'.
Formed in 2009, they serve up deep cuts from the Mancunian’s library, as well as the band’s most well-known hits. They promise to recreate both Oasis’ sound and swagger, priding themselves on the steps they take to recreate the Gallagher-led trailblazer’s distinct wall of sound. Doors are at 7.30pm.
Saturday will be a night at the opera, as Queen tribute band Flash Harry are joined by Spring Break for a night celebrating the best of the 1980s.
Championing the music of one of the greatest bands of all time, Flash Harry have been covering the best of Queen’s releases for over 32 years.
Flash Harry will be joined by fellow ‘80s act Spring Break. Playing a selection of the biggest floor fillers of the decade, the band have ridden the new wave at festivals all over the world. Doors are at 6pm, with audience members invited to dress for the decade that’s being celebrated, due to the proximity of Halloween.
Previously selling out three jazz festival appearances, Mack Fleetwood are easily the most qualified band to close out the series of gigs.
Apostles of the music of Fleetwood Mac, the group cover a wide range from the band’s decades long career, from their blues beginnings, to the emotionally charged arguments of ‘Rumours’.
Blending performances of the band’s timeless and best-loved hits with more obscure fan favourites, Mack Fleetwood are commended for their ability to stay authentic.
The band will play two shows on the Sunday. The first is an afternoon show, with doors at 2.30pm, followed by an evening performance at 7pm.
