'A vital asset for the future'
A new state-of-the-art ophthalmology unit has been officially opened in Cork city.
Designed to serve the growing needs of eye care patients in the Cork and Kerry region, the unit in South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH) is equipped to provide specialised treatments, including advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures.
Helen Donovan, CEO of the SIVUH said: “The opening of the SIVUH Ophthalmology Unit is an exciting chapter in the history of the SIVUH and provides a platform which will enable us to meet the needs of the region.
"We expect to care for approximately 45,000 patients a year. This enhanced capacity which will be delivered in our state of the art building will be a vital asset for the future.”
Prof. John R Higgins, CEO of the South/South West Hospital Group, said: "By centralising ophthalmology services at the SIVUH, we are enhancing the quality and accessibility of care for our patients.
“The opening of this new facility is a testament to our commitment to continually improving patient outcomes and delivering top-tier healthcare services.”
Prof. Higgins added: "The new ophthalmology unit offers an increase in clinical space and includes advanced amenities such as laser rooms, consulting rooms, a corneal topography room, and an electrophysiology room for treatments previously requiring travel to Dublin."
Speaking at the opening, Tánaiste Micheál Martin said: “This Government has committed record investment in our health service, and it is a particular honour to formally open this new Ophthalmology Unit at South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital.
“The new state-of-the-art facility and expanded services represent a significant leap forward in our ability to deliver comprehensive ophthalmic care for people living in the Cork and Kerry region.”
The Cork TD added: “This development helps further the Government’s goal to enhance patient experience and accessibility to specialised treatments. Patients will benefit from improved access, reduced wait times, and the convenience of having all essential services in one location,” he concluded.
A statement from the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital said: “The new ophthalmology Unit represents a major investment in healthcare for the Cork and Kerry communities, with modernised facilities aimed at improving patient outcomes and enhancing the delivery of eye care services.”
The statement added: “The unit is equipped to provide specialised treatments, including advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures, ensuring the highest level of care for patients.”
