Gardaí exhume body in West Cork
The remains of a man were exhumed this week from his grave in West Cork in the hopes of finding out who he was.
The planned exhumation was carried on Tuesday 5 November at St Patrick's Cemetery in Bandon to identify the man 25 years after his body was recovered from the Lee Fields in Cork city.
The remains were taken to the morgue at Cork University Hospital on Tuesday. Efforts to identify him failed in 1999 when he was taken from the River Lee.
Members of the gardaí were also present as the remains were removed from his grave which locals in Bandon look after.
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “The exhumation is for the purposes of obtaining a DNA sample in the hope of identifying the deceased.”
