A remarkable mother
A mother who takes fantastic care of her daughter has been hailed for her unwavering dedication.
For over 12 years, Sharon Lehane from Cobh has been a devoted carer to her daughter Kate who has Down syndrome, is autistic, PEG-fed and faces many complex medical challenges including chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and bowel failure.
Sharon’s unwavering dedication has seen her through countless hospital visits and long stays, including nearly three years spent at Kate’s side in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the hugely demanding care routines, Sharon fills Kate’s life with joy, taking her on outings and to beloved ‘sleepovers’ at LauraLynn Hospice. Her specialised medical knowledge, earned through intense training, has even saved Kate’s life, with doctors often praising her vigilance and expertise.
Family Carers Ireland, the national charity supporting Ireland’s family carers, has now chosen Sharon as this year’s Netwatch Cork Family Carer of the Year.
They said: “Sharon’s impact extends beyond her own family; she’s a guiding hand for other parents beginning their own caring journeys, offering advice and support. Her kindness, selflessness and profound commitment to Kate have earned her the respect of everyone who knows her. Sharon isn’t just an extraordinary carer, she’s a remarkable mother, wife, and friend.”
Now in their 17th year, the awards seek to honour all family carers while shining a light on the urgent need for greater recognition and support of those who go above and beyond in caring for their loved ones..
Peter Cox, local Community Support Manager with Family Carers Ireland, said: “Each year, the Netwatch Family Carer of the Year awards remind us of the vital role that family carers play in our society and shine a light on the incredible work that they do, which is too often unseen and unrecognised. As a society, we must do much more to ensure that family carers are properly recognised, valued, and supported to care safely for their loved ones at home.”
