County Mayor's Diary Cllr Joe Carroll

There is a wealth of upcoming arts opportunities, and I would like to invite proposals for arts projects, activities and events taking place in Cork county during 2025 that may be eligible for funding under a range of grant assistance schemes to make an application.

I’m proud to say that a total of €166,000 was awarded through our Arts Grants Schemes in 2024, providing vital support to 131 worthy recipients. Our arts sector helps sustain communities, supports social cohesion, and improves the quality of life of our citizens.

Through these schemes, we like to support artists and arts organisations, as well as aiding local festivals, performances, exhibitions, and other publicly accessible cultural programmes, many of which are made possible through the hard work of local volunteers.

I’m pleased to announce the launch of the Made by Hands exhibition which consists of 51 artists, makers, and designers at our Library Headquarters Gallery. This new exhibition has opened, will run until 20 December, and will include paintings, print, photography, ceramics, furniture, jewellery, and textiles selected through an open call by our Arts Office.

Many of the works will be for sale and offer an opportunity to acquire an incredible artwork or a special gift this festive season. We are proud to present these works, and it is important to give artists, craftspeople, designers, and other creatives an opportunity to show their work. Mark the dates in your diaries and don’t forget to pay a visit.

A new important survey for the communities of Macroom and Mitchelstown launched recently, and I would like the people of these towns to complete it. The Town Centre First survey is seeking your views on the future of your local towns. The aim of this policy is to create town centres that function as viable, vibrant, and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit, while also functioning as the service, social, cultural, and recreational hub for the local community.

Lastly, I would like to talk about the new affordable housing development in Bantry that was announced recently. Prospective homeowners can apply for the new 3 bedroom houses at An Cnocan, Milleencoola at discounted rate starting from 12 noon on 25 November. The 12 A-rated family homes are in a new development situated a short distance from Bantry town centre, offer the serenity of rural living while being located within walking distance of the town centre. Constructed by Remcoll Developments Ltd, the houses will generally be available for first-time buyers who do not own a home (although a small number of exceptions apply) and Fresh Start Applicants.
