Get the low down on regenerative treatments

Regenerative treatments aim to restore or replace normal cellular function in tissues affected by ageing, sun exposure, or congenital concerns. In essence, they stimulate the body’s own repair mechanisms.

To tell us more, Dr Odile of La Vida Aesthetics sat down for a quick chat with us recently and answered some of our questions.

She recently won the Rising Star in Aesthetics accolade at the 2024 Hi Style Aesthetic Awards.

What exactly are regenerative treatments, and how do they differ from traditional aesthetic procedures?

Unlike traditional aesthetic procedures, which are often more invasive or surgical, regenerative treatments work with the body by using natural ingredients to support its biological healing, enhancing skin health and achieving a more youthful appearance over time.

Could you explain the science behind popular regenerative therapies, like Sculptra?

Sculptra is a wonderful example of regenerative treatment; it gradually stimulates collagen production using poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) - a safe, synthetic material that encourages the body to rebuild its collagen reserves. This creates smoother, fuller skin over time, with results that can last up to two years. Unlike traditional fillers, which provide instant volume, Sculptra works progressively, rejuvenating the skin in a more natural way.

What are some of the latest advancements in regenerative treatments

Recent advancements include Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Exosome Therapy. PRP, drawn from the patient’s own blood, is rich in growth factors that promote collagen production and repair.

Exosome Therapy involves cell-derived messengers that aid cellular communication and regeneration, helping reduce inflammation and improve skin texture, hydration, and elasticity. These therapies represent a shift towards harnessing the body’s own repair mechanisms, providing long-lasting improvements in skin health.

Who would be the ideal candidate?

Ideal candidates are typically those looking to enhance skin quality, boost collagen, and address early signs of ageing without invasive methods.

However, those with severe skin ageing, deep wrinkles, or extensive laxity may not be the best candidates.

Regenerative treatments are also not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals due to limited safety data. Those with autoimmune diseases, active infections, or certain chronic conditions may have contraindications, highlighting the importance of a detailed consultation with a qualified practitioner.

How personalised are regenerative treatments, and how do you determine the right treatment approach for each client?

At La Vida, every treatment plan is carefully tailored to the individual. I consider each patient’s skin type, age, lifestyle, and personal goals to create a bespoke approach. This personalised care ensures that each patient receives the most effective treatment for their unique needs.

How does regenerative medicine in aesthetics fit into the broader trend of ‘natural’ and ‘holistic’ beauty?

Regenerative aesthetics aligns beautifully with the natural and holistic beauty movement by prioritising health, sustainability, and harmony with the body. These treatments support inner and outer beauty, empowering patients to achieve radiant, youthful results that truly reflect a balanced and holistic approach.
