EU funding to help Mallow to thrive in 2025

A regeneration project in Mallow is set to benefit from the implementation of an EU initiative fostering sustainability, inclusivity, and beauty.

Representatives from Cork County Council recently attended a training event on how to better integrate the New European Bauhaus (NEB) into a project aiming to transform the long empty Mallow Town Hall building.

The NEB is an EU policy and funding initiative that fosters sustainable solutions for transforming the built environment under the green transition.

Last year, €7million in funding was allocated to the Mallow Town Hall project under the THRIVE - Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme. The scheme financially supports Irish local authorities in renovating heritage buildings in town centres through EU and national co-funding.

The estimated cost of the redevelopment of Mallow Town Hall is reported to be €10 million.

“So, the biggest contribution of the New European Bauhaus to our project in Mallow is looking at the participatory approach, the bottom-up approach to developing the project with our citizens and stakeholders,” said Aidan Creagh, Senior Executive Officer and THRIVE Project Manager, Cork County Council.

The Building the Future training event, which was held in Limerick, gave practical advice and shared tools to ensure THRIVE projects across all 31 local authorities are sustainable, beautiful, and inclusive through participatory processes, multi-level engagement, and a transdisciplinary approach throughout the project timeline.

So far, 26 projects have received funding through THRIVE Strand 1 to develop integrated urban strategies and for project pipeline development. Also, five projects have received THRIVE Strand 2 funding for refurbishment, renovation, and adaptive reuse of heritage buildings across Ireland.

THRIVE is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern and Midland Regional Programme 2021-2027 and the Northern and Western Regional Programme 2021-2027.

Another THRIVE funding call will open this month offering an opportunity for local authorities to access capital funding of up to €7m for sustainable urban development projects.
