World renowned quartet Leeside bound

One of the longest established and most admired string quartets on the world stage will be performing in Cork city this month.

Featuring two Cork musicians, the Carducci Quartet will play Cork’s Triskel Arts Centre on 18 January as part of their latest Irish tour.

The concert is part of the venue’s Spring String Quartet Series 2025 in partnership with the National String Quartet Foundation.

The award-winning ensemble has a beautiful programme in store for its Cork audience, including Shostakovich’s wonderful ninth string quartet, marking the 50th anniversary of the Russian composer and pianist’s death in 1975.

Also on the programme is Haydn’s string quartet masterpiece ‘D major Quartet Op.20 No.4’, and Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy’s ‘Stamp’, combining elements of related 14th century dances, the Italian saltarello and the French estampie.

The Carducci Quartet comprises Matthew Denton, violin; Eoin Schmidt-Martin, viola; and Cork musicians Michelle Fleming, violin; and Emma Denton, cello.

Founded in 1997, the esteemed ensemble has won numerous international competitions, including the USA Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and first prize at Finland’s Kuhmo International Chamber Music Competition.

Described by classical music magazine The Strad as presenting “a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose, in which severity could melt seamlessly into charm, and drama into geniality”, the Carducci Quartet is internationally acclaimed as one of the most accomplished and versatile ensembles of today.

The quartet performs at prestigious venues across the globe including Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen; The Frick Collection and Carnegie Hall, New York; Library of Congress and John F. Kennedy Center, Washington DC; and the St Lawrence Center for the Arts, Toronto.

Highly celebrated for their diverse approach to programming, the Carducci Quartet has devised numerous projects and is regularly invited to perform new works. Not only mastering the core repertoire, the quartet also presents a selection of new works each season and diversifies further with programmes of film music, pop and rock.

The Carducci Quartet will play Cork’s Triskel Arts Centre at 1pm on 18 January. Tickets cost €17 and €14 for concession. For bookings and to see the full programme for the Spring String Quartet Series 2025, visit triskelartscentre.ie.
