Wastewater threat to Atlantic Pond?

Two roads remain closed in Cork city yesterday causing major disruption to traffic as Uisce Éireann crews work to contain an overflow of wastewater.

The overflow at the Atlantic Pond wastewater pumping station at Cork’s Marina has caused a serious flooding incident resulting in the closure of both Monaghan Road and Centre Park Road.

There is also concern for the impact the flooding might have on the freshwater Atlantic Pond which is an important habitat for Cork’s urban wildlife.

So far it is unclear what the wastewater contains and whether it poses any threat to wildlife.

Uisce Éireann defined wastewater as liquid discharged by homes, businesses, industry, agriculture and storm water from local roads.

The flooding, caused by an equipment failure in the plant, has also hindered workers on their way to and from businesses based on the affected roads.

Uisce Éireann crews have been on the ground since Tuesday night to resolve the overflow and pump excess wastewater away from the area to where it can be safely treated.

A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said: “To reduce the risk of wastewater flooding homes and businesses, some overflows have been opened as a temporary measure.

“Crews are on the ground working to resolve the issue and mitigate the impact of any overflows.

“A traffic management plan has been put in place and a number of streets in the locality remain closed in consultation with Cork City Council and An Garda Siochána,” a spokesperson for the state-owned utility company said.

“Uisce Éireann’s incident management team is liaising with the EPA and Cork City Council in relation this incident.

“Tankers are on site removing excess wastewater overflows. We are asking people to take alternative routes while work is ongoing.

“Uisce Éireann’s priority is to protect public health and safety and minimise harm to the environment. Further updates will be provided as they become available,” said the spokesperson.

The Atlantic Pond serves as a habitat for freshwater, coastal, and woodland bird species, including the grey heron, as well as urban otters. It sits alongside a marshy wetland surrounded by woodland.
