Dragons to roar next month

By Daniel O’Neill

Employees at some of Cork’s top companies will be swapping their pens for paddles next month as they take to the water in 40 foot long boats.

It’s all part of this year’s Interfirm Dragon Boat Challenge which will see top businesses competing in dragon themed boats on the River Lee in teams of 17 involving 16 paddlers and a drummer.

The course is 250m and finishes at Lapp's Quay. No previous experience is needed as a training session will be held in the week leading up to the event.

The race takes place on 12 April, and organisations such as Stryker, GE Healthcare, Cork Airport and Statkraft have already been confirmed to take part.

The aim of the day is to give companies a chance to bond through teamwork, boost morale and have a fun day on the water.

Paddling in unison is essential to winning, so the race is an excellent way to boost teamwork. Whether you emerge victorious or not, the day is sure to be a thrilling way to bond with your coworkers.

The race also gives you the chance to bring along friends and family and have them cheer you on to victory. It’s especially thrilling for young children to watch the colourful dragon themed boats race along the river and take in the festive atmosphere. Previous years have seen contestants bringing their families along to watch and have a laugh at their loved ones taking on the water.

Oisín Creagh, Dragon Boat Helm said: “Dragon boat racing is the ultimate test of teamwork and communication. It’s fantastic to see companies come together, not only to compete but to build stronger workplace relationships and give back to the community.”

The race supports charity Meitheal Mara, Cork’s community boatyard and maritime training centre.

Founded in 1993, it has been creating community for 30 years and has supported people from all backgrounds to sail the sea. It has promoted maritime culture and traditional skills through currach and wooden boat building, as well as giving people of all abilities the chance to experience the thrill of sailing and taking on the river. All donations greatly benefit Meitheal Mara’s cause.

The cost of the Dragon Boat race and included training is €40 per person. Registration is now open to all businesses and organisations. Places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To register or learn more, contact dragons@meithealmara.ie or call 021-4847673.
