Walk with pride for family carers
By Daniel O’Neill
Corkonians are being called on by Family Carers Ireland to take part in a walk to support carers nationwide.
The walk, called Step Up for Family Carers takes place in Tramore Valley on Sunday 13 April. There will be 10 other walks nationwide, and there is an optional challenge to complete 5km on the walk.
500,000 family carers in Ireland provide care to loved ones daily, usually without recognition or adequate support. This nationwide event will raise vital funds for family carers, as well as show them that their dedication is appreciated and admired.
Carer Supports Manager for Family Carers Ireland in Cork Peter Cox is urging people to get involved: “Family carers in Cork do vital work, often at great personal cost. This event is a chance for the people of Cork to come together, step up, and show that we value and support them. It’s not just about the walk—it’s about making sure our local family carers know they are not alone, and that help is available when they need it.”
Irish rugby legend Mick Galwey added: “This walk is a simple but powerful way to send a clear message, we see you, we support you and you are not alone. Whether you join the organised walk in Cork or do 5km in your own area, every step makes a difference.”
Lisa McCormack who is a family carer for her six year old son Rian said that caring for a sick child can be overwhelming, exhausting and isolating, and that more support like this is needed.
She urged people to take part, stating: “By taking part, people are sending a powerful message - we are seen, we are valued, and we are not alone. This isn’t just about raising funds; it’s about recognition, visibility and ensuring no carer is ever forgotten. That kind of support makes all the difference.”
