Spring time swaps

The temperatures are rising and it’s time to start thinking about making those subtle changes to your wardrobe to transition your looks from winter to spring.

I always find the two big changes are footwear and outerwear. There are a few failsafe swaps I turn to year after year that ensure my wardrobe classics are always working hard for me.

First up, and it’s my absolute spring coat go to; is the trench coat. It never lets me down when I’m at a loss as to what to pop over my outfits. It’s such a simple but transformative piece. It can even elevate something as casual as a tracksuit and baseball cap but it will also seamlessly fit into your workwear wardrobe. There is a style and a price point for everyone and now really is the time to invest as the shops are full of them.

Top of my trench wish list is a double belted trench from Ganni that really would blow my budget but is truly sublime. I’ve also seen some very nice ones in Penneys and H&M too if you don’t want to break the bank.

It is a coat that’s worth investing in as it’s timeless and will stand the test of time in your wardrobe. I have the same one for donkey’s years and it still looks as good as new.

I love styling it with jeans and knits for now to give an extra bit of warmth but it works equally well over a summer dress when it gets a bit warmer. While beige is the classic go-to, and the colour I would be encouraging everyone to go for, if you are investing, I also love a khaki green trench or even a navy.

It will very much depend on your colour palette but any of the three options work well with most things that you’ll have in your wardrobe.

Another jacket I’ll be sporting very soon is the leather jacket and I’m really looking forward to getting my black All Saints jacket out of storage. I purchased it about ten years ago and with most real leather pieces, it just improves aesthetically with age.

For a unique and authentic leather jacket keep an eye on vintage or preloved sites. You can’t go wrong with a classic biker style and it’s the perfect jacket to layer over dresses and even over other classics like a pair of denim shorts and a striped t-shirt. I’m just waiting for the weather to get that little bit drier before I start wearing this, but it will be one of my most worn jackets in spring/summer.

I’m also making a shoe substitution and have tentatively swapped out my winter boots for a ballet pump. I did this last week after much studying of the weather forecast and I went totally wild and didn’t even ease myself in by styling it with a glittery sock. Who even am I?!

I was slightly chilled but ultimately it was very bearable. Last year toward the end of the summer I bought a white pair with silver studs and a cute ankle strap, and I have already worn them so much. They are the shoes I reach for when I’m not sure what to wear and I want something a bit more dressed up than a trainer.

They also are the perfect shoe to wear for this time of year with a pair of barrel leg jeans which can be tricky to style. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as doing the seasonal wardrobe swap. Have you made the winter to spring changeover yet?
