City supermarket reopens
A city centre supermarket is set to reopen today, Thursday, following a major refurbishment.
The Lidl store on Cornmarket Street closed at the start of January and as part of the opening, one of Ireland’s most decorated athletes, All-star and former Cork ladies’ Gaelic football and camogie champion Rena Buckley will join the store team and customers to officially cut the ribbon on the newly refurbished store.
In addition, the retailer will provide complimentary vouchers to the first ten customers in line on the morning, alongside offering huge savings on middle aisle favourites.
The new and improved Lidl store will provide customers with an enhanced shopping experience, with feature walls and high ceilings, wider aisles, 17 new self-service checkouts, two Deposit Return Scheme machines, as well as larger in-store bakery and off licence.
Advancing Lidl Ireland’s community-focused objectives under its A Better Tomorrow corporate social responsibility programme, and to mark the re-opening, the staff at Lidl’s Cornmarket store have chosen to donate €1,000 in Lidl vouchers to Cork Penny Dinners.
James Purcell, Regional Property Director said: “Having served the Cornmarket community since 2014, I am thrilled to announce the re-opening of our Lidl Cornmarket store later this month, bringing a whole new shopping experience to local community. There has been a lot of excitement in the area about the refurbished store, and we’d like to thank the customers and local community for their patience during the refurbishment.
“The store looks fantastic, offering an enhanced shopping experience, featuring express tills, and self-service check outs. We’re very excited to re-open the doors and welcome shoppers to experience the new features of the store and join us in celebrating the highly anticipated re-opening on Thursday 20 March.”
In 2024, Lidl procured over €128 million worth of goods and services from over 120 suppliers and business partners across Cork, serving its 22 stores within the county which employ almost 670 team members.
Lidl’s key Cork suppliers include Mallow-based Castlecor Potatoes who have been supplying Lidl with potatoes and onions for 20 years and in the past two years has seen its contract with Lidl grow by a further 20%. Skibbereen-based West Cork Distillers has also upscaled its supply to Lidl, with its best-selling Lidl own brand gin and whiskey products, including Wild Burrow Gin, Wild Burrow Raspberry and Thyme Pink Gin and Dundalgan Irish Whiskey, now exported to 23 countries through Lidl’s international store network.
Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its 184 stores, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices based in Charleville, Mullingar, and Newbridge.
