Walk this way, Cork
By Daniel O'Neill
Some of the best cancer researchers are asking people to help them get closer to finding a cure for the disease and support the fight against breast cancer.
The National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) is asking people to put on their best pink fashion and take a stroll on Mother’s Day, 30 March, to support the fight against breast cancer.
The walk is the perfect opportunity to get the whole family out of the house and do something for a good cause.
The funds raised from the day will help support translational research which involves converting laboratory discoveries into clinical trials for drugs and medical technologies.
It will also support clinical research and trials which involve studies conducted by health professionals on cancer survivorship, cardiac health post-treatment, and the development of clinical trials in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
One in seven Irish women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life, with over 3,587 cases diagnosed annually. The research funded by NBCRI has helped support incredible advancements in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment options, and patient outcomes.
A NBCRI spokesperson said: “Over the past 40 years, survival rates for breast cancer patients have improved from 50% to 88%, reflecting the impact of ongoing research and improved healthcare practices.”
They added: “Currently, 1 in 7 Irish women will develop breast cancer during their lifetim The research we support aims to enhance the quality of life and outcomes for all breast cancer patients through new discoveries in prevention and cure.
“Our fundraising efforts are pivotal in advancing breast cancer research, leading to improved diagnostic techniques, treatment strategies, and patient outcomes for those affected by the disease in Ireland.”
