Scheme to bring 45 affordable homes to city

An eagerly awaited affordable housing scheme has been launched in Cork city and is set to deliver 45 new homes.

The scheme at Glenmore Heights, Lehenaghmore, is the second housing scheme of its kind in the south-west of the city.

The 45 affordable homes are made up of 24 three-bed semi-detached homes, 11, three-bed mid-terrace homes, 2 two-bed end-of-terrace homes, and 8 two-bed mid-terrace homes.

The homes are available for sale from approximately 20% below open market value to those who qualify for the scheme. For example, for eligible applicants, mid-terrace three-bedroom homes will be available from €310,000, and mid-terrace two-bedroom homes from €280,000. The Glenmore Heights Affordable Housing Scheme homes are generally available for first-time buyers who do not have an interest in any other property, although exceptions may apply for Fresh Start applicants.

The scheme was launched this week under the national housing plan Housing for All by Cork City Council in partnership with OBR Developments Ltd. The Glenmore Heights scheme launch follows sell-out affordable housing schemes by Cork City Council at Newton Heights, Boherboy Road; Cluain Chaoin, Tower; Crann Darach, Montenotte; Ardrostig, Bishopstown; Heathfield, Ballincollig; Danesfort, Whites Cross; and most recently, at Seaberry Drive, Grange.

Commenting on the launch, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle, said Cork City Council is committed to delivering high quality affordable homes for the people of Cork.

“This new scheme, the eighth scheme to launch under the Affordable Housing initiative, demonstrates the ongoing work that Cork City Council is doing to deliver housing for the people of Cork,” said the Lord Mayor.

Brian Geaney, Assistant Chief Executive, Cork City Council, pointed out that the Glenmore Heights scheme brings to 356 the number of homes offered for sale by Cork City Council under the Local Authority Affordable Purchase Scheme.

He said: “Over 230 sets of keys have already been handed over to families and individuals who have been supported to gain access to quality, affordable, sustainable homes in highly sought after locations across Cork city.

“Cork City Council will continue to develop and release further affordable housing schemes this year and we are well on track to exceed our ‘Housing for All’ 2022-2026 affordable housing targets,” he added.

It is expected that there will be significant interest in the scheme at Glenmore Heights, and that the A2 energy rated, architecturally designed homes, which are located near the N27 and a 15 minute walk from the suburbs of Togher and Wilton, will be much sought after.

Income limits apply and potential applicants are advised to familiarise themselves with the qualification criteria and the documentation required, details of which are available on glenmoreheights.ie. Under the terms of the scheme, purchasers will enter an Affordable Dwelling Purchase Agreement with the local authority, which will see the council retaining a percentage equity share in the house equal to the difference between its open market value and the price paid by the purchaser.

Applications may be made between 12pm on 15 April and 12 midnight on 6 May via glenmoreheights.ie.
