County Mayor's column

They say: 'don’t shed a clout ‘til May is out,' but with this fine stretch of weather, it’s hard not to feel summer already in the air and to top it all off Cork came out with a mighty win in the hurling last Sunday. A great lift for the county and a proud day for all involved.

As Mayor, one of my greatest joys is seeing the pride and passion displayed in our communities and this past month has been no exception. From heritage to enterprise, from youth to innovation, county Cork is bursting with life, energy, and opportunity.

I’m delighted to announce that Cork County Council has secured over €450,000 in Heritage Council funding through the Historic Towns Initiative. This means essential conservation work will begin on two of our treasured buildings, St Peter’s Church in Castletownbere and Macroom Castle Gate Lodge.

These are not just buildings; they are part of the fabric of our history and identity. St Peter’s Church, which dates back to 1841 is set to become a vibrant community centre, and the Macroom Castle Gate Lodge, standing proudly in the town square, will be weatherproofed and protected for generations to come.

Heritage projects like these are not just about restoring the past, they’re about investing in our future. When we care for our towns, visitors see that care too. They’re drawn to places with soul, with a story, and with a sense of place. That’s why these grants will not only benefit our communities, but also help boost tourism and the local economy.

Speaking of preserving the past, the Skibbereen Heritage Centre has reached a major milestone. There are now over 97,000 burial records from across County Cork freely available online. This is a phenomenal resource, helping people across the world trace their Cork roots.

And while we honour the past, we’re also cheering on the future. Two fantastic Cork businesses, Breakthrough Maths and HappyPath Labs, have made it to the national finals of the Enterprise Awards. Breakthrough Maths, started in 2020, now supports over 2,000 students weekly with top class online math’s tutoring. HappyPath Labs, based in Clonakilty, is using AI to improve customer services for companies across the country.

Both are shining examples of what’s possible when innovation meets local support. I wish them every success.

Lastly, a word of encouragement to owners of vacant or unused properties, Cork County Council is here to help. Throughout April, we’re hosting drop-in days at libraries across the county to offer advice on grants and supports to bring these properties back to life.

So, as the sun shines a little longer each day, let’s take pride in all that’s happening around us from restored landmarks to rising local stars in business. There’s a place and purpose for everyone in county Cork so let’s keep moving forward together.
