Sinn Féin TD for East Cork, Pat Buckley.

Hidden disability parking an ‘essential step’

A Cork TD has called for the installation of hidden disability car parking spaces across county Cork.

Sinn Féin TD for East Cork, Pat Buckley’s call comes on the back of the well received installation of such spaces by other local authorities across the country.

Waterford County Council was the first local authority in the country to introduce such parking spaces in 2022.

Deputy Buckley said: “Across Ireland, one in five people are currently living with some form of a disability, 80% of which are non-visible, such as autism, acquired brain injury, sight or hearing impairment, or learning difficulties. This is why Cork County Council and all local authorities across the county should take the essential step towards greater accessibility and inclusion by installing designated parking spaces for individuals living with hidden disabilities.

The hidden disability car parking spaces are easily identified with a bright yellow sunflower on a green background.

He continued: “The sunflower has become internationally recognised as the symbol of hidden disabilities.

These car parking spaces are installed in a safe location, not immediately located beside the road and are the same dimensions as a wheelchair accessible parking space.”

The Hidden Disabilities sunflower scheme has gained momentum across Ireland in recent years, however, Deputy Buckley said practical steps like designated parking, must accompany these awareness efforts.

He said some individuals would not qualify for a disabled parking badge and a hidden disability car parking space would provide a safe and accessible place to park closer to facilities they need, without the anxiety or judgment that often comes from using a standard accessible space.
