County Mayor's Diary Cllr Joe Carroll
I want to begin by expressing my deepest sympathies on the passing of Pope Francis, a leader who inspired compassion, dialogue, and hope across the world. His legacy will continue to guide many in the years ahead. I also hope that everyone had a restful and joyful Easter break, enjoying time with family, friends, and the beautiful spring sunshine.
Turning now to local matters, I’m delighted to share updates on several important funding opportunities available to our communities across Cork county.
First, Cork County Council has relaunched its Irish Language Events and Initiatives Grant Scheme for 2025. Now in its third year, this scheme supports festivals, concerts, plays, family days, and any project that promotes the use of the Irish language. Whether you’re based in the Gaeltacht or elsewhere in the county, if you’re planning an event that celebrates Irish, I encourage you to apply. Grants of up to €1,500 are available, and the closing date for applications is Friday 9 May. Last year, the scheme supported 16 events across the county, from film festivals to musical performances, and we hope to build on that success again this year.
Next, the Town and Village Renewal Scheme for 2025 has been announced. This vital funding stream supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development, is designed to revitalise rural areas, tackle vacancy and dereliction, and bring life back into our town centres. Projects funded in recent years include Cape Clear’s first children’s playground and the refurbishment of a community space in Millstreet. Funding available ranges from €50,000 to €500,000, and towns with populations up to 10,000 and in some cases up to 15,000 are eligible to apply. Expression of Interest before the deadline of Wednesday 14 May.
In addition, Cork County Council recently adopted its new Corporate Plan 2025-2029. This ambitious roadmap sets out the council’s strategic direction for the next five years, with a strong emphasis on vibrant communities, housing, economic growth, and climate action. Developed through extensive consultation, the plan’s seven strategic pillars reflect the priorities and aspirations of our county’s citizens.
Finally, I’m pleased to highlight the opening of the Clár 2025 Programme, offering funding to rural communities that have experienced population decline. The scheme supports the development of community facilities, transport initiatives and island projects. Grants of up to €65,000 and even €100,0000 for certain projects are available. Applications form Measure 1 must be submitted through local municipal district offices by 9 May. This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen rural life and I encourage community groups to seize it.
I’m also excited to announce that preparations are underway for my upcoming Mayor’s Gala Fundraiser, an evening that promises good company, great music, and the chance to support important local causes.
Until next time, mind yourselves and each other.
