Bridge to shake by December
The famous and much-loved Shakey Bridge could be ready to walk over by the end of the year.
Further works must be done to make Daly’s Bridge safe for public use again after refurbishment work began over one year again.
Gerry O’Beirne, Director of Infrastructure at City Hall, said significant works have been satisfactorily progressed including the phased dismantling, restoration and re-erection of the of bridge deck and towers.
He added: “There are, however, some critical elements of the planned works yet to be completed. These include electrical and lighting works, completion of access ramps and hand and parapet railings, painting, landscaping etc. Most of these works are essential to the safe reopening of the bridge to public use.
“The council is at an advanced stage in its engagements with the scheme contractor and sub-contractors regarding the necessary arrangements for completion of the outstanding items. Completion of the remaining items will take over two months and it is anticipated that the bridge will be re-opened for public use in December. The completion of outstanding works and re-opening of Daly Bridge is a priority for the city council,” said Mr O’Beirne.
He was speaking at the most recent Cork City Council meeting following questions about the city bridge from Independent Cllr Kieran McCarthy and Sinn Féin Cllr Mick Nugent.
The refurbishment of Daly’s Bridge, which commenced in August 2019 following an award of contract to Keating Construction, is the last surviving pedestrian suspension bridge of its type in Ireland.
