World record breakers set to return at Laya
A spectacular science show is set to be unveiled next month on Leeside.
‘Orbax and Pepper do Science’ is the latest performance piece from Monsters of Schlock Professor Orbax and Pepper Klopek, who will be performing in the city next month.
Ahead of their show at Laya Healthcare’s City Spectacular in Fitzgerald Park Orbax spoke to the Cork Independent about their work.
Known for their death-defying stunts and sideshow performances, the Canadians have been setting and breaking Guinness World Records since 2009. “We've got 25 different Guinness World Records for various over the top daredevil stunts that we've tried and that's been a fun thing to try to beat ourselves and beat other people across the world with these records.”
A physics lecturer at the University of Guelph in Canada, Orbax explained the switch to science content in their shows.
“We've been science enthusiasts our entire lives, it’s always been a thing that we enjoy. We've been trying to do science as a show for a while and it's taken us up to this point to really put together an actual show, so we're excited.”
The pair are now attempting to break records in the science sphere, such as the record for the world’s largest elephant toothpaste, a popular school experiment. “We generated 20 cubic metres of soapy foam in a span of about 15 seconds in a fun, ridiculous, giant record attempt,” said Orbax.
While there won’t be a world record attempt in Cork, the show will be just as exciting, featuring slime, stunts and silliness.
“A lot of the stuff that we do in the show is based off of some of the record breaking experiments that we've done before, so you'll expect to see all types of wild and ridiculous science in the show that have been adapted from those record attempts.”
The pair performed at the event two years ago with their sideshow and are looking forward to returning next month to perform Orbax and Pepper do Science.
Of their previous trip here, Orbax said: “We loved our stay in Cork two years ago and we're pretty excited to come back. We don't get an opportunity to get into Ireland very much so the City Spectacular gives us a great opportunity to actually spend some time and enjoy ourselves. I think it's one of our favourite countries that we've ever performed in. Being in Canada, there's a lot of Irish heritage here and it's an exciting opportunity to go over there.”
As the next few months are filled with sold out shows in Canada, don’t miss this opportunity to catch the duo on their only trip across the pond this summer!
Laya Healthcare’s City Spectacular takes place from 20-21 July in Fitzgerald's Park.
