Locals in east Cork are shocked after the body of a Lithuanian man was found in a farm house in Ladysbridge on Monday morning.

Sudden death ‘so close to home’

The discovery of a man’s body in East Cork has been described as “shocking” by a local councillor.

Speaking to the Cork Independent, Fine Gael Cllr Sinéad Sheppard said that her thoughts and prayers were with the man’s family and friends.

Cllr Sheppard said: “When it's so close to home it's shocking really. I'm sure the people of Watergrasshill and Ladysbridge are totally taken aback by this. You hear about things like this but you never think it's going to happen in your own community, and when it does it's a big shock.”

The man, aged 29, has been named locally as Lithuanian national Jonas Grajauskas and it is believed he is a resident of the Watergrasshill area.

Mr Grajauskas’ remains were found at approximately 7am on Monday morning at a farmhouse in Shanavagoon, Ladysbridge.

Gardaí reported that Mr Grajauskas had sustained a number of injuries, although the cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

His remains were then taken to CUH where a post mortem was due to take place.

“I think that whether you're a large or a small community something like this is going to have a huge impact,” said Cllr Sheppard.

She added: “The Watergrasshill area is a small community. I'm sure he is known there and I'm sure the community will come together. It's a fabulous community that they have in Watergrasshill.”

Following the discovery of the body, gardaí arrested a man in his late 20s and detained him at Cobh Garda Station. The man has since been released without charge.

Gardaí have stated that investigations are ongoing.
