Greenway will be on-rail

A new greenway along the disused Midleton to Youghal railway is on track after an arrival of €8 million.

The proposed greenway will incorporate stop-off points at the former stations in the villages of Mogeely and Killeagh. At 23km in length, the Midleton Youghal (MY) Greenway will be routed through the scenic agricultural heartland of East Cork and will have a distinctive character reflecting the natural, cultural and social history of the area to become an important local amenity and a trip-attracting route for visitors.

The route will also traverse an area known as Ballvergan Marsh which will provide opportunities to experience the coastal wetland with spectacular views to Youghal Bay.

Speaking at the announcement, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan highlighted how important this greenway will be to visitors and locals alike.

Planning for the proposed MY Greenway was approved in January 2019 and negotiations with Irish Rail and CIE Group Properties are well underway in order to secure a licence to develop and maintain the Greenway.

East Cork TD David Stanton said: “MY Greenway will be a great addition to East Cork’s overall tourism product and, judging by the success of other greenways, should help to attract tens of thousands of additional visitors to the area each year providing a major boost to the local economy and the opportunity for new business development along the route and in Midleton and Youghal.

“In addition to the tourism benefits, MY Greenway will also be a huge asset to local people as a safe and attractive local walking and cycling recreational facility.”
