New portrait for Douglas library
The Lennox Robinson room in Douglas Library is now complete with a portrait of the Irish playwright hanging in the room.
The Lord Mayor Cllr John Sheehan paid tribute to artist Bernard Canavan whose portrait of the playwright is now the centrepiece of the Lennox Robinson room.
He said: “Bernard Canavan is recognised across the world as the artist who highlights the plight of the elderly London Irish as they face into the autumn of their exiled years with no hope of ever returning to a land that has changed beyond all recognition.”
Executive Librarian Caitriona Honohan said the completed Lennox Robinson room would serve as a tribute to the playwright who was one of Ireland’s leading cultural figures during the last century.
The Lord Mayor also presented a scroll to the artist in recognition of his contribution to the Douglas Library.
During the presentation, the Lord Mayor spoke about the role public libraries play in the development of communities. He explained: “Our libraries are to the forefront of the interface with the community, not only a place of learning but catering to all generations in a variety of ways and long may it continue.”
