Liverpool debut for Caoimhín Kelleher
Corkman Caoimhín Kelleher was set to make his senior debut for Liverpool in last night’s Carabao Cup match against MK Dons.
Kelleher joined Liverpool in summer 2015, and has since drawn the praise of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who referred to him as “an outstanding talent”.
In 2019, Kelleher made his debut for Stephen Kenny’s Ireland U21s squad, establishing himself as the current first choice keeper.
Klopp selected the youngster as part of his squad for their Champions League win over Tottenham Hotspur in June 2019.
After returning from an unfortunate wrist injury sustained in pre-season, Kelleher looked set to make his debut last month against Southampton when second choice keeper Adrian was injured.
The injury occurred less than a week after first choice keeper Alisson was forced to leave the pitch injured during their first match of the season.
However Adrian’s miraculous recovery meant Kelleher would have to wait patiently for his debut against MK Dons.
Klopp has heaped praise on the young prospect, who could potentially see a run in the Carabao Cup if Klopp hopes to avoid any further injury concerns.
Kelleher has been capped internationally at U17, U19, and U21 level.
In 2018 he was named in the senior Republic of Ireland squad for their friendly against Northern Ireland, and again for their UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.
Before his move to Anfield, Kelleher played with Cork’s Ringmahon Rangers. The club’s Twitter account wished him well on the eve of his debut.
