Oh, shoot!

Basketball fixtures were hit hard last weekend with 18 of the 20 National League fixtures cancelled due to Covid-19.

All Cork clubs had their fixtures cancelled but the next games are scheduled to take place here next weekend

The InsureMyHouse.ie National Cup semi-finals are still scheduled to take place in Cork from 7-9 January.

Fr Mathews’ game against IT Carlow in the MissQuote.ie Super League was among the last games to be cancelled along with the InsureMyVan.ie Division 1 game between Fr Mathews and WIT Vikings.

Basketball Ireland National League manager, John Walsh said: “We knew that with the numbers of Covid-19 cases spreading across society, that this was likely to happen. Our primary concern is the welfare of all involved – players, coaches, officials and fans. We will be working with all the stakeholders involved to get these games rescheduled.”

Chair of the Women’s National League Committee (WNLC), Breda Dick added: “Naturally we’d have loved to have played a full festive calendar of fixtures, but the times we’re in hasn’t allowed for that. We’ll continue to liaise with clubs to ensure we can get these games played as soon as possible.”

Chair of the Men’s National League Committee (MNLC), Gerry Kelly said: “This is obviously a challenging time for sport, and the country as a whole, and basketball is no different. We will be doing our utmost to get the unplayed games pencilled in as soon as practicable.”

Basketball Ireland CEO John Feehan stated: “Naturally the health and safety of all involved in our sport is at the forefront of our minds and that is why these postponements have had to take place. Our attentions will turn to the InsureMyHouse.ie National Cup semi-finals in Cork to ensure that these games take place in the safest manner possible.”
