Salmonella suspected at Ukranian shelter

A group of Ukrainian refugees who suddenly became unwell upon arrival in Cork over the weekend may have been suffering with salmonella.

At least 30 of a group of 46 refugees complained of feeling unwell when they arrived at an emergency rest centre accommodation in Banteer last Saturday night.

Symptoms are reported to have included nausea, dizziness, coughing and headaches.

Ambulance crews and other medical professionals were called to the scene where they remained overnight as a precautionary measure. The illness is not thought to be Covid-related.

While salmonella is suspected as the reason for the symptoms, it has yet to be confirmed.

A statement issued by Cork County Council read: “A total of 46 Ukrainian refugees were placed in emergency rest centre accommodation in Banteer on Saturday night 16 April.

“A number of refugees complained of feeling unwell upon arrival. Medical assistance was called immediately and medical help was present on site overnight.

“The HSE's Public Health Unit has been mobilised and the centre currently has restricted access while the matter is being addressed.”
