‘Freeze prices, not people!’
Large numbers are expected to take to the streets of Cork on Saturday to protest against looming energy price hikes.
Those taking part are asked to gather at 2pm on Saturday on the Grand Parade near Cork City Library.
Organised by the Cork Cost of Living Campaign, the protest is calling on the Government to put a stop to the energy price increases set to come into effect on 1 October.
The campaign is also calling for the introduction of a decent living wage.
Speaking ahead of the protest, Cork Socialist Party TD Mick Barry said the Government must be put under pressure to stop the “savage” price hikes.
Deputy Barry said: “We want to freeze prices, not people. We need to resist if we are to exists this winter.
“Heating or eating shouldn’t be a choice – join the protest and raise your voice.”
Budget 2023 will be announced on 27 September, 3 days before SSE Airtricity and Electric Ireland plan to significantly raise their standard household prices for gas and electricity.
