Driver arrested after van rams garda cars

A man in his 30s has been arrested after a van containing at least 2 children rammed multiple garda vehicles in Cork city last night, leaving 2 gardaí in hospital.

Gardaí managed to stop the van by puncturing its tyres using a stinger device.

The incident happened just before 10pm last night when gardaí signalled to a van to stop in the Mahon area.

The van did not stop and proceeded to ram the garda vehicle. The van stopped a short time later but then rammed the garda vehicle again when gardaí attempted to engage with the driver.

2 additional garda vehicles arrived at the scene and attempted to block the van but both vehicles were also rammed. A number of additional garda units were subsequently called to the scene.

A stringer device, used to safely disable a vehicle by puncturing its tyres, was successfully deployed at Carr's Hill and the vehicle was brought to a halt.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested and taken Bridewell Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A number of persons, including children, who were in the vehicle at the time were taken to CUH to be assessed. No serious injuries have been reported.

2 garda members were also brought to CUH to receive medical treatment.

Extensive damage was caused to 2 garda vehicles and 3 other vehicles received minor damage during the incident.
