Tea Day is not to be Miss-ed!
The reigning Miss Cork City has invited Leesiders to enjoy a cuppa as part of a campaign to raise funds for dementia supports and services.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) recently announced Miss Cork City Rachel Lynn O’Leary as its newest ambassador. She is now urging the public to register to receive a Tea Day pack by noon tomorrow, Friday, ahead of Alzheimer's Tea Day on 4 May.
Alzheimer’s is a cause close to Rachel’s heart as her grandparents on her mother’s side both live with dementia. Crowned Miss Cork City 2023 earlier this month, Rachel will be one of Cork’s representatives in the Miss Ireland competition later this year.
She said: “I’ve seen first-hand the difficulties families face when a loved one has dementia. Alzheimer’s Tea Day is vital for fundraising and awareness. I hope everyone will sign up for a Tea Day pack.”
The Tea Day is an annual event which brings people together over a cup of tea to raise funds and awareness for dementia, which affects more than 64,000 people in Ireland. The campaign is the ASI’s biggest fundraising event of the year, it has said.
According to the ASI, the number of people with the condition will double in the next 25 years to more than 150,000 by 2045. An estimated 7,509 people are living with dementia in Cork.
Tea Day events in the past have raised up to €500,000 and the ASI hopes to continue this tradition in 2023. Participants are invited to host tea parties, sell tea and cakes, or simply make a donation.
