American football to touch down at MTU

Cork’s only full contact American football club will take on their biggest rivals this weekend as part of their annual family fun day.

Hosted by the Cork Admirals, the event takes place at MTU Stadium on Sunday 25 June when the Leeside club will go head to head with their long-time rivals the South Dublin Panthers.

The organisers are going all-out to create a USA high school football atmosphere surrounding the event, involving cheerleaders, bouncy castles, food trucks, face painting, touchdown competitions, and live commentary on the game.

The event will appeal to families looking for a fun day out, with many activities aimed specifically at providing entertainment for the kids. However, there is also a lot to be excited about for fans of American sports and American culture in the run up to 4 July.

At the centre of the event is an American football Ireland Premier League clash between the Cork Admirals and the South Dublin Panthers. The Admirals have been enjoying a successful season so far, winning 6 of their first 7 games and currently ranked as the second placed team in the country. The Admirals must win their remaining 2 games to ensure the best possible seeding for the championship playoffs. The Panthers have also had an excellent season, winning 3 of their first 6 games, and are also battling hard for a playoff place.

In the leadup to the game, Admirals Head Coach Alan Lomasney said: “We have been working hard as a team all year and it has been a successful season so far for us. Now we get to play our final regular season game in the fantastic facilities at MTU Stadium against the South Dublin Panthers, who are always a tough opponent and well coached. This is going to be a great game for spectators as both teams know each other well, and both teams will be hitting hard.”

The day starts at 1pm with the game kicking off at 2pm and finishing is 5pm. Entrance is €10 for adults, €5 for students, and children under 12 enter for free. Tickets can be bought at the gate, or online.
