The DJ community in Cork has been left in shock after the death of one of Cork’s finest following illness.

Colin Noone, known as DJ Funky Colin Edwards passed away recently at the age of 55, leaving behind five children.

Tributes have been following his death on 19 July. He had worked in 96FM and presented a popular house show ‘Funk It Up’ on RTÉ Pulse for the last 15 years.

96FM presenter PJ Coogan paid tribute to him on his show, calling him “a true legend and inspiration” for DJs. He did voiceovers, radio jingles and radio adverts as well as being a disc jockey.

“Colin was full of fun and divilment and mischief and love - love of music and love of a good night out… and love of his family and friends.

“His greatest pleasure in life was to see people happy, dancing and clapping their hands. A lovely guy and a hell of a DJ. Rest in peace old friend,” he said.

Colin was well renowned on the Cork circuit for many many years with his funky, highly distinctive voice.

Colin’s love of music was evident through his entire playing career. For decades, he was instrumental in showing up and coming DJs the ropes.

Funky Colin was involved in the successful NRG and Kiss FM stations in the early 2000s in Cork. The words ‘go on Sheeba’ may be a memory for some people! Throughout his playing days, Colin Edwards entertained audiences with his ability to blend genres, create infectious beats, and command the dance floor like no one else.

Close friend and fellow Cork DJ Mucca Twomey has very fond memories of gigging and spending many a session with Colin at the Southport Weekender. They ran many gigs together and Colin played a massive role in helping Mucca run and promote gigs across Cork for years.

One of Colin’s long-time friends was Peter O’Neill. He also wrote on RIP.ie: “He always had a positive attitude and a great sense of fun. He was not only a talented broadcaster, DJ and producer, but was a true family man, who gave so much to his children.

“Colin has left us far too soon, but all who knew and loved Colin will know his music will live on forever through his family and all those DJs who always will look up to him as a legend of the world of music, and a man who was always there to help others.”

He was the loving father of Kerri, Mark, Christina, Laura and Chloe, dear brother and best friend of Fidelma and son of Pat and the late Mary.
