Rhythm and rhyme: Hip-hop meets jazz

Curated by ChoiceCuts and Stevie G, the exhibition is open to all ages, free of charge, and features vinyl displays, talks, interviews, workshops, DJ sets, breakdancing and jam sessions.

Speaking about the exhibition, Stevie G, said: “This is the music of our youth that shaped many of us forever. Generations of us fell in love with jazz through hip-hop sample culture, and we have been buying these jazz records forever too.

“We’ve been very lucky in Cork to have a jazz festival that is now in its 45th year; and we’ve hosted many great hip-hop and jazz acts in that time.”

The exhibition will include record covers signed by legendary artists, some of whom have passed away, like Guru, McCoy Tyner and Sharon Jones. Stevie G says that the exhibition is also an opportunity to pay tribute to the photographers, graphic designers, record labels, and artists whose work often went uncelebrated.

The exhibition highlights the relationship between hip-hop and jazz, paying homage to artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Roy Ayers, De La Soul, Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone, Kendrick Lamar, Guru, Primo, Lonnie Liston Smith and Miles Davis.

Saxophonist Kamasi Washington said: “We've now got a whole generation of jazz musicians who have been brought up with hip-hop. We've grown up alongside rappers and DJs; we've heard this music all our life. We are as fluent in J Dilla and Dr Dre as we are in Mingus and Coltrane.”

The WeGotTheJazz presents Evolution exhibition at St Peter’s is open to the public from 27 October to 6 November.

The Guinness Cork Jazz Festival will take place from October 26 to 30, featuring over 500 musicians and 100 performances across five days.

The festival will also host a music trail across 73 venues in Cork city, Douglas, and Kinsale. The jazz performances will spill onto the streets of Cork City, creating a vibrant atmosphere for The Big Fringe.
