Empty bowls fill hearts for Gaza

A food gathering event raising awareness and funds for the people of Gaza will be held in Cork city this weekend.

Taking place at St Peter's Church, North Main St on Saturday from 2pm, it is the latest event in the Empty Bowls for Gaza series which has already raised over €3,200 for Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) in Gaza. The event follows on from a series of bowl making workshops at Nano Nagle Place.

Attendees to this weekend’s event will each receive a unique, hand-crafted bowl for Palestine.

The event, which was organised in collaboration with local chef Orla McAndrew, will feature music, poetry readings, collectable art, and a number of spot prizes and draws on the day, including bowls made by the actor Mary McEvoy, chefs Darina Allen, and Rory O’Connell, and others.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s event, organiser Martha Cashman said: “This food gathering is a culmination of a huge community collaboration; from the crafting and firing of bowls, provision of food and labour, prizes, and funding for Doctors without Borders in Palestine.

“While empty bowls may be a symbol of need and hunger, they are also hopeful and beautiful. Coming together in solidarity with the people of Gaza to share a food gathering experience with the handcrafted ‘empty bowls’ made from clay will be a unique and very special event in Cork.”
