Public meeting on air quality tonight
This week is Asthma Awareness Week and a public meeting will be held his Thursday on air quality in Glanmire and across the North East ward.
Organised by the Green Party in Cork, it comes after requests from residents for more information on the effects of poor air quality.
The event will be addressed by Prof. John Sodeau of UCC who will talk about some of the effects of air quality and what residents and Cork City Council can do to improve it.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Green Party councillor, Oliver Moran, said: “Air quality in Glanmire is affected by many factors including the burning of smoky fuels and engine idling as well as environmental and geographic conditions. This can be particularly bad during the wintertime but the marking of World Asthma Day this week is another reason to consider it.
“Cork City Council has been working on the problem, including installing a network of publicly accessible air quality sensors. The city was also the first local authority to put in place its own air quality strategy. An important part of that strategy is sharing knowledge and understanding of the effects and causes of air pollution and the changes we can make locally to improve it.”
The discussion will take place on between 7.30–8.30pm on Thursday 9 May at Riverstown Community Centre.
