Hypothermia is not the look we are going for

It may be summer but lets call a spade a spad, it’s also quite cold.

As much as I try and brave the elements and pretend it’s sunny, it’s just not fun when you are out and about in your summer finery and are also absolutely frozen. Hypothermia is not the look we are going for people!

With this change in weather, it seems like we may be adding more knitwear and cover ups to our summer wardrobe than ever before and there’s less of a big wardrobe changeover needed.

So, what are you to do when you’ve put most of your warm clothes into storage in anticipation of a sunny July but that just has not happened? I’ve been out and about recently at various events and I’ve had to get creative when it comes to deciding on what to wear over my summer wardrobe.

What are you to do when your options are to either walk around damp and cold whilst insisting on wearing your summer wardrobe on those wet and windy days or do you wear jeans and jackets and then become all hot and sweaty when the cold day takes a turn and it’s suddenly sunny? Let me tell you both options are quite unpleasant.

The key of course to getting this right is clever layering and picking the right fabrics. I also need to have the right footwear on or I am running wrong for the day. I packed sandals for my recent weekend away and they were my only footwear option for that day and of course it was raining leading me to spend the day with cold wet feet. It’s lucky I didn’t catch pneumonia!

One of my go to looks for summer days that aren’t quite summery is a longer length midi dress with long sleeves and a v-neck. I feel covered somewhat but the v-neck allows me to layer on the gold jewellery and is a flattering shape.

Then I just bring along wither an oversized blazer or a denim jacket and finish off the look with an ankle length cowboy boot or trainers. It’s always a winner in my book and you can be warm but also look like you’re wearing a summer outfit.

A light knit cardigan is also a summer style must have and works wonderfully over this look also.

The cardigan is also my go to for styling up cotton tank tops and wide leg jeans or indeed with slip skirts.

As well as being a great layering outfit, it can be a look that can take you from day to night in a flash. Just change from flats to heels, add some statement accessories and your ready for dinner and drinks.

There are some absolutely stunning cardigans out there at the moment from high street to high end and I have in the past treated myself to a very statement cardigan from Hayley Menzies.

It is on the pricier side but it’s the sort of thing you can wear year round and makes a style statement while the rest of your outfit can be kept quite simple.

If in doubt about what to wear over your outfits, I would suggest investing in a linen blend blazer in whatever shape you feel suits you best. I have been living all summer in a cream, longline blazer from H&M that somehow just seems to work with most things in my wardrobe, keeps me warm but not too warm and instantly makes everything look a bit dressier. A piece like this in your wardrobe is worth it’s weight in fashion gold.
